Reconstruction

The you that I know is
not the you that they lost
vibrant young man lost in
blood and fire and snow.

I know the eyes watching
from between white bandages
shaking breath sighing and
pulse fluttering in paper-thin skin.

Did you know that I read you
the worst poetry I could find
in those long hours
when I stayed by your side?

Pouring onto you the dregs
of the archives just to watch
the way your eyes narrowed
as if you knew what I was doing.

Well, it worked didn't it
gave you some motivation
if recovering meant that one day you
could toss the book across the room.

Don't look so surprised
when I say I'll keep my promises
go along by your side and
stay with you to the end.

I don't know the you they lost
my friend of twelve years was
brought up out of snow and
cracked open to rebuild anew.
