Title: Time changes everything
Fandom: Stand Still Stay Silent
Characters/Pairing: Lalli/Niko (OC)
Rating: 0+
Length: 300 words
Summary: I hope some day you'll see me / I hope some day you'll spot me in the crowd / Smile and say you miss me / I hope some day you'll say my name out loud
Other: Prrrobably going to revisit this idea at some later point, because this format isn't doing what I want it to do.
Time changes everything
"Lalli?"
"Yes?"
"Do you think we'll ever meet?"
Lalli looks upward at his mind's sky. Treetops and stars. The grass under his head is cool and soft.
The two of them rest together, opposite each other, head-to-head. Lalli lifts one hand and coils a strand of Niko's hair around his fingers.
It's a weird question, he decides.
"You're here now."
A laugh. "Sure. But I mean – in person."
"No."
"No?"
"You're far away." This, they both know, is the truth.
He ignores what Niko says next, about having half the travel qualifications already.
There's no point in thinking about it.
"I'm sorry," he says.
Lalli listens. Waits. Doesn't say anything.
He bites at the inside of his cheek. Looks down at the water beneath his dream's rocky bank, their reflections mirrored in its gentle surface. His own pale form. And beside him, Niko in his bright clothing.
This will be the last time, then.
"I'm being transferred to day shift," Niko says. "I won't be able to come and see you any more."
Lalli watches as he puts his head in his hands.
"I see," Lalli says. Closes his eyes. Buries his disappointment deep.
They knew this was coming, anyway.
The air in Luleå smells weird. Different from what Lalli is used to. But he and Emil have only been here a few days. Lalli knows that he will have to learn to ignore it.
Sky darkening. Work soon. He breathes deep, is about to put his hood up when he hears his name.
"Lalli?"
What?
He looks over.
A man stands nearby. Just came off shift, by the tired set to his eyes. Not a Swede. Finnish? He looks familiar –
Lamplight glints against the beads in his hair.
"...Niko?"
The bright smile he gets in return tells Lalli everything.
