Got You
It was the first heavy snow of the season. That morning, the world had been thick with the fluffy whiteness. As the day progressed, it did not melt, but acquired the wet, sticky texture that was the bane of everyone’s existence. As they walked together it stuck to their boots and their prints left firm impressions in the snow. In spite of it all, however, they were both of good cheer – though Estonia, for his part, would have been of even better cheer if Sweden would walk more slowly. It seemed no matter how many times he requested he slow down, he did not, and it was difficult to keep up with his long strides. After a time Estonia fell behind and plotted.
The first snowball that hit Sweden’s back caused him to turn and raise an eyebrow. The second time, he stared hard at Estonia, then questioned, “’s that you?” Naturally, Estonia cheerfully replied that it wasn’t.
The third time, instead of saying anything, Sweden bent and scooped some snow into his mittened hands, glancing at Estonia out of the corner of his eye, as if daring him to run. At that, Estonia grinned. He wouldn’t; he certainly wouldn’t! Having decided that, he scooped up some snow too – then rose just in time to dart away from a flying ball of snow. Gathering himself, he retaliated with an attack of his own. Soon they were battling each other.
Somehow – he wasn’t sure when – he heard something, and then he realized. Laughter. Laughing. Sweden was laughing. The sound filled Estonia with a warmth that ran through him straight down to his toes, and when the next snowball hit him square, he didn’t mind. He tackled Sweden, and the unexpected impact made them fall together into the thick, fluffy snow. They were soon soaked to the skin, the both of them, but in that moment it didn’t matter, as the world was filled with the sound of their laughter.
